well, we had this singlish forum kinda thing for IS today.
and to say the truth... i think singlish is actually detrimental to our society.
very few singaporeans are actually able to switch between singlish and english proficiently.
if this is the case, won't the standard of english in singapore drop?
there was this poem that we had to think about for IS - 2 mothers in hdb playground by arthur yap.
i was seriously clueless about why that was considered literature.
there was so much singlish in it, noone else other than singaporeans would have understood it.
in fact, i was having difficulty deciphering some of what was said in it.
worse, singlish actually lowers one's self-confidence.
i know that for me, whenever i'm in a singlishy mood i feel really terrible whenever i'm communicating with english-speaking people.
kinda like.. lowers my self esteem whenever i speak singlish.
so i've decided that from now on, i shall speak PROPER english.
with all the "th" sounds and such pronounced properly, and no more "la"s, "lor"s and yada.

although many say that singlish is singapore's identity....
i kinda disagree with it.
we can have other identities, why come up with one that impedes singapore's growth instead of helping it?
with singlish, foreigners are actually closed off from the rest of the community.
they'll feel left out and all.
isn't singapore looking toward like.. globalisation and such?
foreign talent... global city hub... tourism industry....
with singlish, these can't be achieved to their optimum.
so hey...
don't speak singlish, ok? (:
